Ambassador Ajit Kumar holds a master’s degree in history from St. Stephen’s College at Delhi University. He has served as the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to United Nations Offices and other International Organizations in Geneva. He was also the Ambassador of India to the Republic of Zimbabwe, Consul General of India in Durban (South Africa), Frankfurt (Germany), and Atlanta (U.S.A). He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1979 and has held posts in Damascus, Mexico City, Islamabad and New Delhi. As the deputy leader of the Indian delegation to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, he participated in multilateral negotiations on the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) in the 1990s. He had served as Director and Joint Secretary in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs (D&ISA) Division in the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi. He has attended several sessions of the United Nations Disarmament Commission and the UN First Committee on Disarmament and International Security issues in New York. He also attended several sessions of the Conference of State Parties of the Chemical Weapons Convention in The Hague. Kumar has chaired several national and international meetings and seminars and is the author of a number of articles on disarmament and international security issues. In all his postings, he has promoted economic and cultural diplomacy as well as closely interacted and assisted the Indian diaspora. He assumed the rank of Secretary to Govt. of India in 2014. As Ambassador & Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations Offices and other International Organizations in Geneva, he promoted India’s interests in an effective manner with his active engagement with 18 multilateral organizations, including UN Specialized Agencies, dealing with a range of specialized areas including human rights, humanitarian issues (disaster management, refugees, migrants), health, labour, intellectual property rights, international humanitarian law, telecommunications, information & communication technologies, parliamentary affairs, and meteorology. Ambassador Ajit Kumar superannuated on 31.3.2017 in Geneva, after nearly 38 years of distinguished career in the Indian Foreign Service. At present, he is the Resident Director – Corporate Affairs, Hinduja Group Ltd, New Delhi.
